MsKitty…Loving the Lighthouse

MsK LtHse clam bv

MsKitty is really getting in to this lighthouse thing.  What would a cat be doing at a lighthouse anyway?  I don’t see why they wouldn’t be good places to hunt for mice.  Oh, just imagine the number of stairs a cat could run up!  Every cat we’ve ever had loved to climb stairs and find good observation decks.

The fun part about drawing and painting is I get to make things up as I go.  So, why not a kitty at a lighthouse?  Doing multiple iterations lets me explore ideas.  And, I like the compositional possibilities of frame-within-frame.  Most of all, this is a fun way to play with color, shape and line!  Enjoy.

Variations on a Theme, with Lighthouse

MsK Tpny LtHs v1 bv3

One of my favorite things to do is draw and compose variations on a theme.  Naturally, if you’ve been to my blog before, you’ve noticed this syndrome.  It has become a necessity.  I feel my brain say, “well, what if I tried this”.

I drew the study of Grays Harbor Lighthouse from an ornament I have.  Then, I developed the composition with MsKitty and Toy Pony.  Of course, the points of view are different!  And, challenging!  With the small ornament, I’m looking down on the top of the lighthouse.  When I started drawing this composition, I wanted to emphasize the height of the lighthouse, so I chose a view looking up.  When you’re doing this from memory, and you have no memory to draw on, it can be kind of dicey!  I had to imagine.  When I went as far as my imagination would go, I looked up the lighthouse on the internet.  I made some minor adjustments.  I imagine I may yet draw this composition again!  It’s just too much fun!

Thank You: Art Every Day Month & 20 Min Challenge!

K2 Litehse v2 bvThank You Art Every Day Month!

And, thank you Katharine Cartwright for posting my drawings to “Twenty Minute Challenge!“  I invite you to visit these wonderful sites!

Art Every Day Month:

It is fitting to end November with a MsKitty piece since I started the month with “MsKitty visits Still Life with Toy Pony”.  This month I participated in “Art Every Day Month (AEDM)”, with Leah Piken Kollidas Hostess Extraordinaire!  Leah is a wonderful hostess and artist.  Her kitty series is delightful; she has a knack for catching the gesture and expression of cats.  And, she does other exciting pieces, including blobs, female figures…well worth a visit to her blog.

The artist who participate in “Art Every Day Month” are a diverse group.  The arts include sculpture, writing, collage, mixed media, altered books…etc!  We’re all out there searching, creating, cheering each other along.  It was a fun adventure.  Thank you!

A word about Katharine Cartwright’s blog and the “Twenty Minute Challenge”:  They’re special!  Kathy’s blog discusses all sorts of interesting topics on painting, to include books and composition.  The Twenty Minute Challenge has postings of twenty minute created pieces of art from a diversity of artists.  The work is inspiring!

MsKitty’s Visit to the Lighthouse — D2

I wanted to build on the first version I did of MsKitty goes to the lighthouse.  The lighthouse is inspired by our local Grays Harbor Lighthouse.  The lighthouse is across the bay; I use a small replica ornament as model.  The sea shell is stylized after the types I find on our beaches.

Some thoughts on design:  I’m experimenting with repetition as a design element.  I’m repeating linear shapes to link the elements of the composition.  After seeing the first piece, I wanted a more variation in the violets, going from cool blue/purple to warmer violet/red.  I like how the variations of color and shape size play with the feeling of depth.

These are fun little studies. The fun part is having each one generate more ideas.  MsKitty’s quest continues, though at a slow pace!  I’m adding the previous version of MsKitty at Lighthouse for comparison.

Coastal MsKitty….

MsK at Bch Litehouse bvMsKitty has decided to “Go Coastal” for awhile, at least for today, and maybe….who knows how long.  She likes lighthouses.  We have one nearby on the southern part of Grays Harbor.  Since we live in Grays Harbor, we thought we’d paint in purples and violets…which has absolutely nothing to do with Grays Harbor.  Well, we’ve never been to the lighthouse, so what would we know?  Besides, how much gray can one handle in the middle of November anyway?  So, perhaps Coastal MsKitty teleported to a lighthouse in say, Florida!  That would work!

These watercolors help me explore design.  I think Coastal MsKitty may have to linger while I play with design ideas.  The trouble is, she wants to go to an entire list of places…what to do…   I guess we’ll just have to see.

By the way, it is just the feminine feline way to be able to change fur color as fits the situation!

Enjoy!

MsKitty Has Coffee at the Beach

MsK CoffeeatBeach 18Nov09bv

I get funny little ideas from time to time.  Today’s posting is one just funny little idea.  I had the idea of MsKitty sending “postcards” from her places of travel.  I imagined the type of postcard that has multiple images super-imposed on a background image.  Of course, I have to do things my way.  Here is the first.  After working it, I thought “hmmm, this would be a great design for a shower curtain”….

The reason behind these small studies is to practice composition.  My intention is to do these fast and without the usual buzzillion layers.  This is going to be an “idea bank”; some may be developed later.  And, it’s fun!
