Creative Every Day 2010

249/365: It’s All About the Water

September's theme for "Creative Every Day" is water.  This is a perfect theme for someone who works or plays with watercolor….'cause it's all about the water.  And the paint.  And the paper.  And the brushes.  And the artist's vision.  But, it's about the water.

Today's study of Toy Pony is definitely about the water….and the paint….and the design….but mostly about the magic of water.  This is an exercise I found in Linda Kemp's book "Painting Outside the Lines".   I don't want to give away "how to do it", because it's her exercise.  And there's a couple of ways one might achieve the results.  But, its the water that allow me to get the fun, diffuse colors.  I'm going to try this again.  Oh, no salt, no resist.  Just paint and water.

Have a wonderful Labor Day.  This is my labor and passion.

242/365: On “Fire”…

First, a word of thanks!  Thanks to Eva Macie for citing me in her blog post.  I'm honored!  I heartily recommend reading her recent posting; it includes a great definition of an artist!

I have been exploring the theme of "fire" this August as part of the "Creative Every Day 2010 Challenge".  This is the final posting for the challenge this month.  I thought it fitting to include a painting I did inspired by forest fire season in the Cascades.  Last fall my husband and I were camping in Southern Oregon.  We saw three different forest fires.  The third one was near Diamond Lake which is in the Cascades.  The fire was beyond the mountains that surround Diamond Lake.  We saw the dense smoke.  As I sat in our camp site drawing the scenery I was struck by the warm wind.  Around me butterflies and aspen leaves were moving in the breeze. The winds were spreading the fires and smoke.  I had one of those odd moments of deep mystery.  I worked to capture how I felt.

The swirling, spiraling shape represents the wind.  The colors might allude to the forest fires, or to the coming of fall.  The leaves, trees and butterflies are all caught together in the cycle, spiral or web of life.  After the fires, the environment will heal and new growth will start the cycle over again.

This design continues to inspire me.  I'm posting the painting along with the original drawing and two new drawing I'm working on.

Thank you.

235/365: Fire-less in Washington

More drawings on the topic of the "Creative Every Day" topic of the month: Fire.

I used to like the old fashioned lighters; they had neat mechanisms.  And there was a certain smell.  But, we don't have any in the house.  So I used these instead.

It seems I'm having fun drawing things that refer to fire instead of the flame, candles, candlesticks, lighters.  Fire-less here on the  foggy western coast of Washington.  Maybe the flame got wet and went out!

My candles would melt if they were on fire.  Did you know the origin of putting candles on a birthday cake?  It originates in Germany.  I like the symbolism of the birthday candle.

228: Candles and Candle-less

Still playing with the idea of flames and candles as part of Creative Every Day's theme of "fire".  In two of today's drawings, I have a candlestick(s) with the no candles; and in the other, candlestick with no flame.  The small object upfront in the sepia study is a Swedish candlestick I have.  Why no flame or candles?  Perhaps by their absence, the candle or flame become noticeable.  Or, and more likely, I'm out of candles…Swedish or Norwegian candles anyone?

226: MsK Checks Out “Klompen” and “Geta”

"Klompen" are traditional Dutch wooden clogs; "Geta" are traditional Japanese wooden thong sandals.  And, MsKitty checked out a micro miniature pair of each.  The shoes are in honor of the Every Day Matters (EDM) challenge #1: draw a shoe.  I'm sort of stuck having fun drawing different shoes.

And, she's (MsKitty) still wandering around the Norwegian glass candle holder ("lysestake"), theme of "Creative Every Day" for August.  Sort of an eclectic mix of knick-knacks to see and draw.   Today is a day of multiples:  multiple shoes, challenges, drawings, languages….sort of a trend here!
