MsKitty’s world is not strictly linear. Yup, she’s back at the teapot. Perhaps she needs some Chai tea before her next adventure. Or, more likely, she is insisting that I paint her in color. She is, after all, a colorful cat. Tomorrow, she does goes someplace else….wait and see!
These two color studies were done on different paper. Variation 1 was done on Arches 140lb cold press watercolor paper. The second was done in a sketchbook, the Robert Bateman Cover Series by En Tour Artist Products, inc. Its 110lb paper, suitable for light washes of watercolor paper. Its what I like to use when we go camping and is like working with hot press paper. Part of the reason for these studies is to prepare myself for painting while camping.
Update: Check out this posting on Myrna Wacknov's blog. She has a very neat home made travel pallet. I'm using something similar.
Enjoy!

How great that you paint while camping! I tend to shy away from painting while traveling, thinking it will be too complicated. Maybe I just need to get more portable supplies.
The different effects are very interesting. I use the Robert Bateman sketchbooks for charcoal and love them. I did a couple small ink drawings plein air and dropped in watercolor and like you said, the surface is much like working on hot press. I can't wait to see where Ms. Kitty goes next — camping?
I love the way the shape of the teapot and Ms. Kitty set up a nice repetition of curved line.
I like your watercolor studies very much. Amazing how much richer the colors look on the Arches paper!
Hi Jul, I’m like you, I tend to shy away from painting while I’m traveling. I want to, but, keep getting stalled out. I had in the back of my head a cool little pallet I saw on Myrna Wacknov’s blog. She takes a small tin, adds lids and turns it into a pallet. I’m doing the same thing at home and testing it out to see how I like it. Being portable and doable is my goal. I updated this posting with a link to Myrna’s travel pallet.
Hi Judy, Good paper does make a difference doesn’t it? I had to persuade myself to use good paper, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Mary, I was telling my husband Robert that I need to take Ms Kitty with us when we go places; she is THE MUSE, after all! In the meantime, I get my inspiration by wondering around the house and while out on my morning jog. Thanks!
Oh, I love Ms Kitty already!
Oh thank you! I’m sure MsKitty is purring! She had to bat me over the head of few times to get me to pay attention…most insistent!
Fantastic…such great color use…I really love it!
I love the loose feel of these – and of course Ms Kitty's attitude!
Hi Linda, I appreciate the encouragement; thanks!
Hi Casey, Thanks; it’s something different for me to draw with my brush. Cats have such fun attitudes!
I so appreciate how you take a color study and make it into such vivid beauty. Ahhh, what a role model for me. I play with watercolor… I am a writer who uses visual arts to express when I can not "say" with conventional language what I say… I always marvel at what "real" visual artists create when doing something as simple as a color study.
I look forward to getting to know you better during Art Every Day Month!
Hi Julie, Thank you for stopping by! It’s fun seeing what one can do with three simple colors: red, yellow blue. I appreciate and am humbled by your compliments!
