Blog Theme Designs
Thanks to the work of my husband, Robert, I have custom themes for my blog. Robert designs my themes and includes details from my paintings. I am delighted with the results and I hope you enjoy them. Periodically, the theme will change...just wait and see! Scroll to the bottom of the page to see what painting is featured in the theme.
Additional Websites
Another thanks to my husband Robert; I have two other websites: festiveabstracts.com (new paintings) and stermer-cox.com (gallery and events). Please stop by.

Today’s drawing was done during a power outage last night.  Talk about being “blind”!  Drawing in the darkness would have made seeing the paper difficult, had I looked.  Ok, I did have to look to see where to start.  The subject was illuminated by candlelight, causing some of the contours to be lost in the darkness.  It was fun and a great way to pass the time when you have no power.

I live on the Washington coast.  It’s power outage season.  We are having lots of wind and rain.  Who knows, it may become contour drawing season too!

Speaking of contour drawing, you’re invited to join the fun.  Do your own and post it to Diahn Ott’s Blind Contour Drawing page! If you’re participating in “Art Every Day Month” and need a project, do a contour drawing!

Oh, the drawing is of the salt and pepper mill, Tabasco sauce bottle, drinking glass and candle jars.

Enjoy!

  • Margaret, this is a tremendous idea. I love how you took “advantage” of the power outage to create some ultra-cool art. It feels so expansive to me, to only have the contours, to not feel compelled to “fill everything in…”

Reminds me of poetry, when we specifically leave space for people to breathe, to be open, to listen for their own messages in the words.

THANK YOU! (and hey, we are #1 and #2 today! That’s a new experience for me!)

  • Ana:

    Dear Peggy (aka Margaret),
This is my second attempting at writing a comment on this blog entry, as the last submission sent me to an error page?
I think drawing in the dark is a wonderful way to ignite and connect with yourself and the objects around you. Your lines feel very special to you in that experience.
I love your new design and I think your husband Robert makes a wonderful contributor to Art Every Day Month. :)
    Happy Blessings.

  • Margaret … Great drawing for being “in the dark!” You created some really interesting shapes.

  • Fantastic, Peggy! I love the lines on the salt and pepper mill, especially!

  • I love blind contour drawings. I love regular contour drawings, too, but the blind ones are so funny to see when you’re done. Such surprising things happen.

  • Hi,

Our power outage season is Summer when everyone is trying to keep cool. I was going to ask you about the blind contour drawing as I saw this on your other sites (I think).

    Cheers

  • Kelly:

It is amazing the minute detail that you an see when focused on the contour and not your paper. I love it!

  • I love blind contour!!! Yay for the basics.

  • i like the idear of rdawing in the dark, oftently, i draw at night and use a little head light
    thanks for your page

  • Hi Julie, Ana, Kathy, Diahn, Rowena, Kaylene, Kelly, Leah, Julie Ann and Lilas!

Wow! I feel like I hit the “motherlode!” I appreciate all the comments! OK! I invite all of you to participate next week in Diahn’ Ott’s blind contour Friday..just for fun!

Oh, and just for extra fun, do it by candlelight; makes it sort of festive.

I find it really impressive how well blind contour drawing works for me. The actual drawing looks funny, but in a wonderful way. What I really like is how I feel more comfortable drawing from life. I love the feeling of drawing forms and edges….oops, getting carried away!
Julie, I like your reference to poetry; interesting, thinking about letting the drawing “breath”

Ana, Thank you! Must be weird electrons on the internet today. I did receive both comments.

Kathy, It was fun and exciting seeing the shapes derived from a “found” set up.

Diahn, The edges and changes in plane on the salt and pepper mill were fun! I look forward to the challenge! Oh, this was the second I did; I did one of a recliner; it was fun too.

Rowena, They are fun, aren’t they? I’m always surprised at how much fun blind contours are.

Kaylene, Ugh! I feel for you; not fun being without power in the summer heat! We have a wood stove to keep us warm and that’s easier than trying to cool down!

Kelly, You’re so right. I think it’s interesting that some angles are different than what I assume they are; the blind contours get it “right!”

Julie Ann, I keep referring back to the basics; hopefully I get better at them. I certainly learn something new each time!

Leah, Definitely kept me entertained… My husband was concerned about my trying to draw in the dark. I don’t have to see what I’m doing, so it worked!

Hi Lilas, I need a little head light for drawing at night when we go camping; have to look for one! Thanks!

  • I really admire your eye for the edges.

  • I love blind contour drawing! They’re so fun and then it’s also fun to paint them afterwards as an abstract design. Of course you’re the expert at abstracting so don’t need to tell you that.

  • Hi Jana, And, guess what, I do these on scratch paper and don’t do anything with them. How silly is that? You’re right; while drawing, I get itchy to play with the design. They’re fun.

  • Hi Stephanie, I love it when eye and hand coordinate and I can “feel” the edge…even if for a moment! Thank you!
