#49: Still Life with Toy Pony, A Little Otterness / Botero
For some reason, I like the big, curvey shapes of this drawing. It reminds me of Tom Otterness or Botero sculptures. Ok, perhaps a stretch, but I like the big simple shapes. The mood is quite, still, with a slight case of whimsey!
Speaking of Tom Otterness, he’s done one of the neatest “how to” instructions I’ve seen. Look at Tom Otterness’ “Making the Sculpture” page from his website; festive! I’m inspired!
To build a little on yesterday’s discussion, one thing I’ve learned from doing these drawings is not to give up until I like it or the design is “resolved”. I did not start out to do a drawing like this. I was searching for a design. I use the properties of graphite pencils to my advantage. I can smudge, lift, darken, restate, erase, do over… what ever I need to push/pull a design. Sometimes I find something fast, other times its a labor. It’s a process that works for me.

It’s very “neat” seeing the progression of your work. Like you, I really like the curves. Very “Art Deco!”
Hi Kathy, Thank you! The progression is making me think about all sorts of key problems: narrative, style, content. And the fun part is seeing the similarities and differences with each design. I do like Art Deco!
Thank you for the nice comment Peggy! I had your site bookmarked for some time now. What a great resource and so inspirational! I want to commit to that 20min challenge…but after the holidays I think!
Hi Angelica, Thank you! I’m honored! I enjoyed looking at your site and reading your poetry.
