Drawing 56: Still Life with Toy Pony
Drawing 56! Yay! Getting closer to 60. It’s a little milepost I’ve set for myself. I am particularly pleased with drawing number 56. I drew a sort of Cubist face for my toy pony. I like the humor of looking two or three directions at once. It makes me stop and look. There’s a sort of “winking” as you try to figure out which way the face is looking. You go between the two options. In this case, I think the head on view is more dominant. But, you can’t avoid seeing portrait view too.
One thing I like about doing multiple drawings of the same things: each is different. And, I try new approaches to keep the composition interesting. In this piece, I introduce the wave shapes. I think it gives a little relief from the flat horizontals and verticals.
I love working with graphite! I’ve updated the slide show on the Still Life with Pony Page. You can see all the drawings, just for fun! Enjoy.

Hi Peggy,
this one is probably the best Tony Pony you did so far. The wave shapes make it realy very interesting. Good pencil work!
Peggy- I think this is one of my favorites. I’m struck by the shading- how you’ve used the dark contrasts very effectively. And the toy pony- I’ll have to agree- his face is magnificent! I will check out your slide show. And thank you for looking at my admittedly homemade website. I hope to see a remarkable improvement in my work and style in the next two years- that is what I’m working towards. Knowing and visiting artists such as you Peggy- is inspiring and motivating. You’ve been a tremendous influence. I FINALLY responded to your delightful blog award (thank you)- so when you get a chance- check out my latest blog post.
Today’s drawing- MAGNIFICENT! Well done!
Pam
The cubist face on the pony is great! I also like the introduction of wavy lines. Nice composition.
Hi Jutta, Thank you; makes me wonder why it took me 55 drawings to get to this one! It’s funny how it works!
Hi Pamo! Thanks for stopping by. I think you’re an “original”, or perhaps your personal voice is strong. It’s tremendously fun to look at your work. It will be fun to watch over the next …future!
Hi Kathy, As I was looking in the mirror while coming my hair, I saw the wave…oh my goodness, I interjected myself into the composition! Kind of funny, but there it was. I love how drawing can make you see things relate in interesting ways. Thanks for stopping by Kathy!
i like to follow your poney
Hi Lilas, Thank you! I always wanted to do horse drawing and here she is!
Hello… thank you stopping by my blog. I see you love to draw – as well as paint watercolor. I used to paint watercolor and over the years transitioned into acrylic, and then collage and now some assemblage. But I have always had a love of graphite and charcoal and drawing– and sometimes will still incorporate graphite and drawing into my work.
